Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
SDG 9 is about finding innovative solutions to build resilient infrastructure and promote sustainable industrialization. Here’s how a McMaster business professor is working on making ecommerce logistics better for communities, the environment and the economy. |
Sustainable solutions and same-day delivery
Transportation policy tends to focus on moving people, not goods. Our cities and communities weren’t set up to cope with thousands of delivery trucks criss-crossing our streets every day to deliver retail items to individuals in their homes.
That’s why a growing shift toward online shopping — even before the COVID-19 pandemic ramped up demand for same-day delivery — is putting immense strain on our environment, our roads, our neighbourhoods, our industries … and on us, as we pay dearly for all these issues.
Elkafi Hassini is working on solutions to make ecommerce logistics more efficient for industry and better for the environment, as well as kinder on consumers and residents affected by it. The triple bottom line, as it’s called, is a fine line to walk, but he’s well on his way.
